Evangelion fans have been waiting for 7 years to see the last film in the Rebuild of Evangelion series. Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0, had undertaken delays until finally– yes IT’S HAPPENING– fans get to see the first 10 minutes of the movie. Showings of these 10 minutes will take place at various locations including Japan Expo Paris, Anime Expo in Los Angeles, Shanghai and Japan. The movie itself is scheduled to release in 2020
Why Have We Been Waiting For So Long?
So what’s with the delays? Fans have been through a lot while waiting patiently for the film:
Back in 2013, film producer and director Hideaki Anno expressed his state of depression, stating that “if [he] didn’t take a project that wasn’t Eva into [himself], [he] wouldn’t be able to keep going forward”. Thus, he worked with Hayao Miyazaki on Studio Ghibli’s The Wind Rises, a new Godzilla movie, and short animation projects in the Japan Anima(tor)’s Expo (also where the ME!ME!ME! music video was first released).
After working on these projects with more creative freedom, Anno’s state of mind gradually improves, and he gives thanks to his wife and friends who helped him “remain in this world”, implying how severely this dejection affected him. However, he wanted fans to understand that he’d like to take more time with the project, once again acknowledges the support he has received, and expresses gratitude for people who have continued to watch his works.
What Happened In The Previous Movies?
Now that brings us to the movies themselves. If you remember little about what happened in the last movie, don’t fret — here’s a recap of what happened! Previously, we saw Shinji being reintroduced to the others who are working under WILLE, a new organisation led by Misato to defeat NERV. Additionally, fourteen years have passed and Shinji struggles to understand why his old friends are upset with him. Shortly after, Rei, piloting Mark.09, takes Shinji away, who is feeling very overwhelmed about the developments which occurred during his slumber.
As Shinji spends more time with Rei in Central Dogma, he realises that she has no memory of him and only obeys orders. It is then revealed that she is a “new” Rei, another clone of Shinji’s mother, Yui Ikari.
During this time, Shinji’s bond with Kaworu also grows as they play a piano duet, roam the ruins of Tokyo-3, and he learns more about what happened after he fell into a comatose state. Kaworu explains how these ruins were the result of the Near Third Impact, an attempted artificial evolution which occurred due to Shinji awakening Unit-01 in Evangelion: 2.0.
Later, the two enter Terminal Dogma in Eva 13 with hopes to undo the damage Shinji has caused, by using the Spear of Cassius and Spear of Longinus which are with Lilith. However as they draw closer to Lilith’s resting corpse, Kaworu strongly suggests that they stop, and Asuka appears with Mari, angering Shinji and causing Eva 13 to awaken. Kaworu notices that the two spears are instead both Spears of Longius, and he and Asuka both beg Shinji to not pull them, but he does it anyway (GOD DAMMIT SHINJI). Fourth impact starts however Kaworu sacrifices himself to halt it.

What Can We Expect In Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Then?
It’s hard to say since the first 10 minutes of the movie shows… part of the gang in Paris acquiring new parts to repair Eva units while fighting off European Evas adapted for military use which are forbidden by the Vatican (?) I have no clue as to what’s going on. There is no confirmed date for the release of the film, and we probably won’t know until that day draws near. We shall wait till 2020 to find out, and until then, サービス サービス!! (“Service service!!”).
