Fullmetal Alchemist Plot

Edward and Alphonse Elric are two young brothers living in the village of Amestris. Their father, Van Hohenheim, left home when they were still young, while a few years later their mother, Trisha Elric, dies as a result of an illness, leaving the two orphans. The brothers then try to bring her back to life through alchemy, but the transmutation does not go as planned and Edward loses his left leg while Alphonse his entire body. In an attempt to bring Alphonse’s soul back to the human world, Edward sacrifices his right arm to bind his brother’s soul to a suit of armor, then having his lost limbs replaced with mechanical prostheses called automails.

After Edward’s nomination as State alchemist, the two brothers begin a journey through Amestris to search for the philosopher’s stone, an alchemical object capable of overriding the principle of equivalent exchange, and thus regain their original bodies. During their journey, the Elric brothers must face several opponents who, like them, are interested in the stone; among them Scar, a survivor of the Ishbar War who plots revenge against the State alchemists for having exterminated his people; and the homunculus, a group of human-looking creatures with strong fighting skills and the ability to regenerate their wounds through the use of philosopher’s stones.

As their research continues, Edward and Alphonse discover that Amestris was founded by the homunculus and their creator, a being known as Father, who secretly control the army and plan to use the entire nation as an alchemical circle to transmute it into a giant philosopher’s stone. Upon discovering the Father’s plan, the Elric brothers, along with some members of the army and other allies encountered along the way, decide to oppose it.

During the final battle, Alphonse sacrifices himself to give Edward his missing arm, thanks to which the boy destroys the philosopher’s stone of Father. Renouncing forever the use of alchemy, Edward manages to recover his brother and the two resume their lives, deciding to travel to see the world and gain new knowledge.
