The Scorchstone Hellion in Dauntless is one of the hardest monsters to beat with a massive 12 Threat Level. 400 Power is recommended at the very least.
First off, it’s recommended to keep a build that allows you to have immunity from lava since a lot of it’s attacks will be AoE’s and consist of lava damage. Wearing Blaze Armor can trivialize a lot of that. Alternatively, Volcanic Armor set also works. At the same time, your weapon should be a Frost weapon as it’s weak to that and you need to deal as much damage as possible in a short amount of time as it likes to move a lot.
For this the Chain Blades or Repeater do wonders. Recommended are the Repeaters as maintaining distance is a benefit. Try to equip Evasive Fury too as you’ll be dodging a lot and you’ll want to do as much damage as possible. A perk to avoid fire damage is also recommended. Basically enough to literally be immune to it, since you’ll be seeing a lot of that.
How To Beat The Scorchstone Hellion In Dauntless
There are several attacks that the Scorchstone Hellion does, most of which can reach over a wide distance making it difficult to get close, however, with fire immunity you can close that distance and dish out enough damage before running away again.
STICK TO THE FACE! This is the most important. The Hellion’s most brutal attack is its tail attacks which can deal massive damage, and by sticking to its face, you can avoid that. Alternatively cutting off the tail works wonders in stopping it from ever using it again. It will try to make a running shoulder attack at times, but it is easy to tell and just dodge to the side to continue dishing out damage.
Note if you get to the back of it, be prepared for some horrible attacks. If you’re near its feet it will keep stomping the area or kicking the players away. When you see it raising its feet, attack it when it does that and then dodge away since the windup is big enough for you to punish it. These stomps can cause lava to emerge when it’s Aether-charged, so be careful if you’re not fire-immune.
One of it’s most repetitive and annoying attacks is when it burrows into the ground. A few moments later, a hole will appear, showing where it will pop up from. Simply run towards the crater and the moment it launches out, roll towards it. There will be lava from the crater, but with fire immunity, you should be safe. However, if you chose not to have that, roll to the side the moment you see it launch itself from the hole.
Every now and then, the Hellion decides to spew lava from its mouth as it begins its retreat. The damage isn’t necessarily huge plus with fire immunity, this makes a good opportunity to keep hitting it, especially if you are using a Repeater or weapons with a long-range attack.
There is also a Jumping Body Slam that you should be careful of. But it’s slow, and you should be able to hit it a few times before dodging away.
You can’t boop the Hellion, but there’s a way to make it stumble on its side. By staggering it a few times or breaking its part, it falls down helplessly giving you a few moments to dish out massive amounts of damage while the Hellion is vulnerable.
